The Panier is not a district, it is officially included in the district of the Hotel de Ville and in the district of Grands Carmes. It represents the oldest city in France. This is the historic site of the Greek colony that came from Phocea (Asia Minor) 600 years before J-C. to found Massalia. The primitive city was then spread over three hills: the Saint Laurent hillock to the west, the bust of the Basket in the center and the hillock of the Carmelites to the east. Today better known as the district of the Panier, because of the inn “The Logis du Panier” which gave its name to the street, then to the district. It is therefore the oldest “district” of Marseille which is also one of the most visited, located in the heart of the historic center of the city, close to the Old Port. It is a permanent testimony to the turbulent history of ancient Massalia.
The district of the Town Hall contains an unofficial part of the Panier district, home to many artistic and tourist attractions: galleries, ceramists workshops, painters … as well as many museums, historical monuments and remarkable buildings such as the Hotel -God, the Saint-Laurent Church, the Bell Tower of Notre-Dame-des-Accoules Church, the Préau des Accoules, the Hôtel de Cabre, the Maison Diamantée, the Pavillon Daviel … The Panier district is part of the work undertaken as part of the Euroméditerranée urban development project.
