Le Panier is not a neighborhood, it is officially included in the Hôtel de Ville neighborhood and in the Grands Carmes neighborhood. It represents the oldest city in France. It is the historical site of the Greek colony that came from Phocaea (Asia Minor) in 600 BC to found Massalia. The primitive city then extended over three hills: the Saint Laurent hill to the west, the Panier hill in the center and the Carmes hill to the east. Today it is better known as the Panier district, because of the inn “Le Logis du Panier” which gave its name to the street, then to the district. It is therefore the oldest “district” of Marseille which is also one of the most visited, located in the heart of the historic center of the city, a few steps from the Old Port. It is a permanent testimony to the eventful history of ancient Massalia. The Panier is home to many artistic and tourist attractions: galleries, ceramists’ and painters’ studios… as well as numerous museums, historical monuments and remarkable buildings such as the Hôtel-Dieu, the Saint-Laurent Church, the Bell Tower of the Notre-Dame-des-Accoules Church, the Préau des Accoules, the Hôtel de Cabre, the Maison Diamantée, the Pavillon Daviel… The Panier district is part of the work undertaken as part of the Euroméditerranée urban development project.
